Universiade 2009 Belgrade

The twenty fifth anniversary summer Universiade will be held in Belgrade between July 1st and July 12th of this year. This will be this year’s largest sports event organized in Serbia.
Some 9 thousand athletes – students from 140 countries will compete in 15 sports and 208 disciplines. Serbia will welcome athletes who will compete in athletics, judo, football, basketball, fencing, volleyball, swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, diving, artistic gymnastics, table tennis, archery, tens, taekwondo and water polo.Sports event of this size requires ample preparations, including building and reconstruction of sport venues. In New Belgrade, a veritable small town has been built – the University Village – where athletes will be staying during the Universiade. Competitions will take place on more than 60 locations, each of which needed to fulfill FISU standards.

Apart from the importance of accommodation, the mission of the Universiade as an international institution is to spread values that are the core of academic sports. Universiade Belgrade 2009, in association with universities and university organization will leave a legacy personified in the belief that academism and sport are interconnected. Universiade Belgrade 2009 will be chance for making new contacts and for creating new friendships, not only among athletes.

Pescara 2009. -  26. jun – 05. july

With the entrance of L’Aquila Rugby players who held the t-shirt of Lorenzo Sebastiani, the young team-mate victim of the earthquake that hit Abruzzo last 6th April, the Opening Ceremony of XVI Mediterranean Games has begun.

A downpour has beaten on the Stadium, but immediately finished. After a deep mourning and pain in Abruzzo, this night in Pescara the international sport event has became a symbol of rebirth and reconstruction. Since 1951 the event is considered, a part from the competitive spirit, a symbol of politic and diplomatic involvement in a peace integration of the countries of “mare nostrum” basin.

The president Amar Addadi has talked a lot about the tragic situation in whic Abruzzo has faced the appointment with the Games: “Despite the earthquake that hit Abruzzo, the Games will be held regularly. We thank from the bottom of our hearts the Italian friends and the citizens of Abruzzo. Our games – Addadi has added – are a praise to peace and people from Mediterranea are united by common history and common roots”. About sport and competition, President Addadi has affirmed: “for athletes the time has come to do their best in order to give us emotions, but the competition must be faithful and without tricks. Our games must be clear and don’t have to be involved in doping”.

Jacques Rogge, president of Cio, has underlined that this is a special edition of the Games, addressing a kind thought to the Olymoic Committee and to all the people from Abruzzo, wishing that this event “will bring happiness and hope” to this Region. To declare officially opened the Games, the president of Senate Renato Schifani.

The pending result at the end of the first part of the game made angry the representation of Serbia and in the “fifth speed” they worked out the sequel of the game in which all team members entered in the “goal list” by solving the other section of the match in their favour (18:11) by winning their opponents of Irfan Smajlagic, who because of inappropriate behaviour towards the judge earned yellow card, with high eight “pieces” of difference.

As an image of Olympism, Coubertin thought the rings had deep significance: that of the union between men. He multiplied the image to create a total of five rings. He designed and commissioned the Olympic flag to mark the 20th anniversary of the IOC’s founding, on 23rd June 1914 in Paris.
